NAME OF PROPOSED PROJECT: Project H: a cooperative collection development proposal for classes H-HX

PROPOSAL GROUP CONTACT: Peter Allison, UConn

PROPOSAL GROUP MEMBERS: Peter Allison, Bill Monroe (Brown); Sandy Brooke (Williams)

DESCRIPTION: YBP/BLC Customers to try to cut duplication in H-HX classes

OUTCOMES / DELIVERABLES/BENEFITS: Demonstrate what can be accomplished in a large publishing area with minimal guidelines beyond the use of YBP and Gobitween.

"The approach we are recommending requires no meetings, no lists and no allocations of responsibility. We ask only that each selector approach their review with a degree of cooperative 'mindfulness.' Selectors remain free to buy any title they believe their users require. Our hope is that the information in Gobitween will encourage them to pass on titles whose local use is less predictable, and redirect some of their efforts toward titles that may be unrepresented in BLC libraries." (from the letter of solicitation)

POTENTIAL ROADBLOCKS: Enthusiasm and commitment of selectors and encouragement from their Directors.

CONSORTIAL STAFF SUPPORT NEEDED: None

MONEY / RESOURCES REQUIRED: None at this point.

ESTIMATED TIMEFRAME FOR THIS PROJECT: Two years or more. Benchmarks based on OCLC collection analysis tool won't be measurable before FY2008-2009.

BENCHMARKS FOR SUCCESS:

  • 20% reduction in titles in H-HX acquired by 3 or more BLC libraries (measured against YBP Data)
  • 10% increase in total number of titles acquired in all LC classes (measured against OCLC collection analysis data)
  • Feedback from and interaction among participating selectors
