Charge

Charge: To enhance cooperation, collaboration and sharing among BLC members in the area of information literacy.

Action Items:
  1. To establish a shared working definition of information literacy and a program for its development among BLC members. This should include information literacy skills and issues for both our users and librarians themselves. The TF should consult with those who have attended the Information Literacy Immersion Conferences.

  2. To identify existing handouts, online guides, PowerPoint presentations and similar tutorials related to information literacy issues and to make these available to all members of the BLC through a central clearinghouse. These might include tutorials on using specific reference tools for patrons, and presentations on broader issues such as models for faculty/librarian collaboration on information literacy issues. The TF should define how new items will be added to the clearinghouse.

  3. To establish a strategy for BLC members to pursue information literacy activities, particularly collaborative activities between librarians and faculty to promote information literacy in the classroom.

  4. To explore possible areas for active collaborative development of projects and tools in support of the above strategies. These projects and tools should be collected and made available to BLC members. They might include specific jointly completed projects or suggestions as to strategies and approaches to creating new tools.

  5. To lay the groundwork to explore grant possibilities. This should include the proposal of specific projects with a statement of their pedagogical and classroom effects. Possible faculty partnerships should also be suggested.

Communication: The Task Force will communicate with the BLC community through the BLC web page, BLC-L and any COI that may have interest. The Task Force will work closely with the BLC Office and the Director Liaison to make sure information about the project is distributed.

Staff Development: In order to achieve the above, the task force may need to arrange for training of members so that task force members are approaching the tasks on equal footing. The Task Force will find appropriate ways of publicizing the availability of the shared tools and materials so that BLC members will be aware of these resources.

Goal: This Task Force works in support of BLC's Goal 1 which seeks to take advantage of available technology, staff expertise, and collective information resources that advance the teaching, research and service missions of the members.
